A shade shop sells width by the inch. A worktop shop sells area. A sign shop adds a finish that is not a stocked SKU. “Shopify native variants vs a price calculator app” is how you split those from a T-shirt in small, medium, and large.
The app on the calculator side is Options Price Calculator. Formula examples are in an earlier post. Here the only question is whether the product stays a variant.
Treat these as knock-outs. A missing row is not rescued by a star rating.
Discrete combinations with inventory and a fixed price belong in variants.
A fourth axis, or a measurement that is continuous, does not. Shopify allows three options. A variant per millimetre is not an inventory model.
The price on the product page has to follow the input. A note on the order line with the old price is not a calculator.
Line item properties write text onto the line. They do not change the unit price.
A formula has to return a number, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses.
Extra fields are not variants and they are not stock. Stock per millimetre is out of scope for this app too.
Free is capped at 20 uses. Conditional pricing, lookup tables, file upload, and live preview are Premium at $19.99. Show and hide of fields sits on the $39.99 card.
Read on 4 November 2026, Shopify Help — Adding variants: up to three options per product, up to 2,048 variants. Options can differ by product. One product can be size, color, and style. Another can be weight, finish, and material. Past that, Help points at an App Store app, or at theme code that reads line item properties. Above 100 variants, some themes, public apps, and custom apps still on the REST Admin API do not follow. The ceiling is 2,048. It is not 100. “Unlimited Shopify variants” is the other false sentence.
On Plus, Combined Listings can group products into one listing, with up to three more options on top. That is still a SKU build. The changelog of 15 October 2025 raised the count from 100 to 2,048. It did not add a fourth option.
| What you sell | Variants | Options Price Calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Small / medium / large, plus a color, stocked | Yes | Skip the app |
| A fourth choice that is not a SKU (lining, hem, control side) | No fourth option exists | Yes, as a field beside the real variants |
| Price equals width times drop times a rate | A variant per cell hits 2,048 and still is not stock | Yes. The formula builder must return a number |
| A note only, price unchanged | Properties, which Help already names | Only if the price has to move |
| Inventory for every millimetre | No | No. Configuration, not a SKU replacement |
| More than 100 variants on an old theme | You may create them. The theme might not | The calculator adds no variants |
| Lookup table or if/then price | Not in variant admin | Premium, $19.99 |
| Show or hide a field | Not an option type | $39.99 card |
| Price a shopper cannot edit in the browser | The variant price comes from Shopify | A server check exists. It ships off until you enable it |
You link a calculator per variant. One variant on the product means that link covers the product. Changing variant changes calculator. One calculator per variant. Source: linking products and variants.
Stay with variants when all of this is true.
The buyer picks from a list you already stock. The price is a number on the variant, not a calculation. You want inventory and media per combination. You are inside three options and comfortably inside 2,048, and the theme can render that count. Nobody uploads a file or types a length that should change the price.
A tee in three sizes and four colors should not grow a calculator. A gift message that does not change the price should stay a property.
Admin stops being enough when the price is arithmetic. A roller blind at 56.2 inches by 72 inches is not a dropdown. Sheet vinyl by the square foot is not a dropdown either. Four axes (fabric, mechanism, color, control) do not fit in three options, and 2,048 variants of three axes do not create a fourth. The October 2025 change gave you more combinations of the three options you already had.
On 4 November 2026 the listing is Built for Shopify. It describes unlimited product options and dynamic prices from dimensions and selections, without extra variants. Category tags include swatches, dimensions, dropdowns, file upload, numbers, custom text, and variants display. Variants display means the real variants stay on the page. The app does not replace them.
The formula builder accepts `+`, `-`, `×`, `÷`, and parentheses. One documented shape is `(product_price + width * height) * material_multiplier`. The result has to be numeric. Field keys become variables. Numeric product and variant metafields can enter the formula. Custom variables break a long expression apart. Lookup tables (`lookup2d`) and conditional if/then formulas are marked Premium in that article.
The storefront block is a theme app extension. Put it on the product template, under the price and above Add to cart (extension guide). Themes differ, which is why a selector picker exists for the price and the add-to-cart button. “Works on every theme with zero setup” is not in the docs.
The listing bullet about server-side validation matches a setting, not a silent default. The safety article says the toggle stays off until someone opens the app’s theme settings and saves it. Off: the cart trusts the calculated price. On: a signature and a payload hash have to match, or the line is not expanded into the order.
Prices on the listing, 4 November 2026, in USD. The plan tabs read Free, Starter, Premium, and Ultimate.
| Plan | Price | What it adds beyond variants |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 20 uses. A live made-to-measure catalog fails here |
| Starter | $9.99 / month | Unlimited options, AI, formula builder, metafields, styling, multilingual |
| Premium | $19.99 / month | Conditional pricing, font picker, live preview, price breakdown, lookup tables, file uploads |
| Ultimate | $39.99 / month | Everything in Premium, plus show/hide fields, draft-order checkout, an admin calculator, setup |
AI and the formula builder start on Starter. A different formula past a size threshold is Premium. Show and hide of fields is the $39.99 card. Do not score a lower tier for those rows.
On 4 November 2026 the listing shows 5.0 from 29 reviews: 29 fives, and zeros on 4, 3, 2, and 1. The three newest cards:
30 October 2026, Orange Shapes (Netherlands): font, height, thickness, color, and add-ons; support called fast.
29 October 2026, Brooklyn Butcher Blocks (United States): instant countertop estimates.
23 October 2026, Kingdom Decals (United Kingdom): it matches the shop; support replies in time.
Those cards do not show a developer reply in the fetched text. There is no lower score to weigh. Check the listing live; counts move. Launched 15 August 2025.
If the product is three options, a fixed price, and stock per SKU, leave it in admin. If a fourth choice or a continuous measure will not fit a variant, properties only write text on the line, and 2,048 is not a licence to mint a SKU per cell. Options Price Calculator covers that gap with fields and a formula: Starter for the base, higher once conditions, lookups, or uploads are must-haves. Turn the server-side check on when the price has to be enforced.
