Shopify wholesale registration form: apply, get approved, then see trade pricing

A Shopify wholesale registration form is the front door, not the price list. A business asks for trade access — company name, VAT number, chamber of commerce — you approve, and only then does that account see net rates. Skip the gate and “wholesale” is a leaked code or a form any visitor can open.

A customer account is not a trade account

Shopify’s native customer account is built for consumers: email, password, done. Anyone who signs up is a customer. There is no built-in “wait for approval before you see net pricing.” You can create accounts by hand, password-protect the whole shop, or use native B2B companies and catalogs (capped on Basic/Grow/Advanced, uncapped on Plus). That is a real Shopify path. Plenty of EU merchants still run a blended D2C storefront on ordinary customer accounts and tags. Pricing must not leak before approval. If the theme already shows tiers to logged-out visitors, or the bulk form is set to “All customers,” registration is theatre.

A mailto link. You create the customer in admin, type the tag, send the password. Fine for five resellers. At fifty it is a full-time onboarding desk.

Open signup, tag them later

Anyone can create an account. Sometimes you add `Wholesale` afterwards. Until then the buyer sees retail — or worse, you pointed the bulk form at every logged-in customer and a consumer account checks out at net.

A discount code after a phone call

You call, you send `TRADE20`. No form, no audit trail, the same code for every buyer. Codes leak. No groups.

Native Shopify registration only

Email and password. No company fields, no approval queue, no link to a group tag. You cannot tell an installer from a neighbour.

None of those paths gives you: application → review → tag → a rate only that logged-in group can use.

• never “All customers”;

• products via a collection;

• one pricing strategy per form.

Tag-based visibility: the customer must be logged in; tags match with OR; one bulk form per customer; do not reuse a tag on a second form; adding a tag in visibility settings does not tag customers for you. Approving a registration and attaching the group tag in Shopify admin (or your usual onboarding step) is still required. No tag, no form. No form, no wholesale price.

Walk-through: application to first order

You sell installation hardware from the Netherlands. Consumers keep using the regular shop. Installers may order only after you have seen their company details.

1. Put a Shopify wholesale registration form live (listing: custom form + approval). Company name, registration number, VAT number, contact — whatever you need to decide. No net prices on that page.

2. The application lands. You approve or reject. Rejected accounts do not get a group tag.

3. Approved buyers get `Wholesale_T1` (or `Wholesale_T2` for buying groups). Tags are not case-sensitive; spelling must match exactly.

4. Bulk form T1 is visible to `Wholesale_T1`, for example 10% below retail. T2 has its own form and tag — see multiple bulk forms per group.

5. The buyer logs in, opens “Wholesale order” in the menu, sees T1 prices. Logged out or untagged: no form.
