Color, size, and fabric already occupy the Variants card. Shoppers still want lining, a mount type, or a file. The admin will not add that row. Shopify add a fourth product option is not a fourth native option. Adding variants caps a product at three options and 2048 variants. Help text for a fourth dropdown is not there.
Variants are inventory. Lining is a configuration. Options Price Calculator puts the extra choice on the product page as a field, then folds it into a live formula. You keep three SKU axes. The shopper still sees a fourth control.
The longer limit piece is more than three product options. This one is narrower: why the fourth choice should never become a SKU, and which field type to use instead.
Shopify counts options, not “things a buyer might pick.” Size, Color, Material fill the three. Extra *values* on those options are fine until combinations hit 2048. A *new* option name is not.
Shopify’s own note: more than three options or more than 2048 variants means an app, or theme line-item properties. Properties store text. They do not change price. Checkout keeps the variant amount.
Real SKUs stay native. Millimetre widths, a yes/no surcharge, and uploads do not. Forcing them into Variants means split products or a grid nobody stocks.
Two products: “lined” and “unlined”. Two URLs, two feeds, two inventory rows. Promotions run twice. Shoppers compare nothing.
Stuff lining into Material. Material already had linen and cotton. Now it has “linen + lining.” The option name lies. You still have three slots. Combinations balloon.
A theme select under the description. `properties[Lining]`. The warehouse reads it. The price stays $89. Support answers “is lining extra?” by hand.
None of those keep three inventory options *and* a priced fourth control.
Options Price Calculator is Built for Shopify (5.0, 26 reviews). Listing: unlimited product options — dropdowns, radios, checkboxes, numbers, dimensions, file upload, swatches — plus formulas, without extra variants. Free: 20 uses; always free on Develop. Starter $9.99/month: unlimited options, formula builder, metafields, multilingual, AI. Premium $14.99/month: conditional logic, Font Picker, live preview, price breakdown. USD.
Conditional show/hide and live preview are Premium. A fourth choice that stays visible — checkbox or dropdown — is Starter.
A useful split:
Native options 1–3: anything that is a SKU.
Calculator field: anything that is not (lining, mount, extra layer, open text, file).
Radio buttons and dropdowns: exactly one pick, each value a number for the formula. Checkbox: configured value or `0`. Text Field and file upload when the fourth “option” is not a list.
From formula example 2:
``` product_price + lining ```
`product_price` is the selected variant. `lining` is the field key. Formula builder allows `+ - × ÷ ( )`. Helpers: `Math.min`, `Math.max`, `Math.ceil`, `Math.floor`, `Math.round`. Round last.
Link per variant. Same math on every color: one calculator, bulk link. Different rates per fabric: a second calculator or Premium conditionals. Theme app extension below price, above Add to cart. Use the selector picker for price and the button. Themes differ; do not claim zero setup.
Roman blind. Native options: Fabric (linen / cotton), Color (sand / charcoal), Control (cord / chain). Three slots used. Variant price is the smallest unlined panel. No Lining option. No Width option.
Calculator fields:
Checkbox `Blackout lining`, key `lining`, value `18`
Number `Width (cm)`, key `width`
Number `Height (cm)`, key `height`
Formula:
``` product_price + lining + ((width / 100) * (height / 100) * 42) ```
Preview: variant €89, 180 × 240, lining on. Area 4.32 m². Fabric 181.44. Lining 18. Total 288.44. Same blind, lining off: 270.44. Native options stay three. The fourth choice lives in the field.
Show lining only on linen? Premium conditional logic. Until then the checkbox stays; off contributes `0`.
AI generation of fields and formulas is Starter+. Treat it as a draft. Check preview numbers yourself. Server-side validation is part of the app: checkout follows the formula, not only the theme.
Multilingual labels (Starter+) cover the extra field the same way they cover Width. The formula does not change when the storefront language does. Do not invent a fourth native option per market; Markets do not raise Shopify’s three-option cap.
A file upload as the “fourth option” (artwork, a measurement PDF) is on the listing. Price it as a fixed add-on or as value × number of files, following the formula examples. Live mock-up on the product photo is Premium Product Personalizer — a different feature, not required to sell the upload.
Install Options Price Calculator. Free to try; Starter for unlimited fields.
Open the product whose three options are already SKUs. Do not add a fourth native option.
Checkbox or dropdown for the extra choice. Numbers if dimensions belong with it.
Formula: `product_price` plus the extra field. Preview off, on, and empty.
Link per variant. Place the app block. Place a test order. Check line and amount.
Do not split the catalog into “with” and “without.” Split the *choice*: SKU in Shopify, surcharge in the calculator.
Shopify add a fourth product option is not another row under Variants. Native stops at three options and 2048 variants. Lining, mount, and uploads are fields with a number in the sum. The catalog keeps three inventory axes. The product page still shows the extra control.
Add that control in Options Price Calculator. The matrix stays small. The price still moves.
