Shopify customer spreadsheet editor: cells, save bar, then Shopify

A Shopify customer spreadsheet editor is not an export to Excel and back. It is a table *inside* admin: you click a cell, pick a locale or tax-exempt value, see the change staged, and only the Shopify save bar writes to the API. Until that click, nothing is permanent. Discard drops unsaved work.

Admin is a profile, not a grid

Shopify Customers is built to open one account. That is not a spreadsheet. You cannot put a “Locale” column next to “Tax exempt”, run `is empty`, and fill a hundred cells before you save. Locale drives notifications. Tax exempt drives whether checkout charges tax. Tags and consent live on the profile — not in one workable table.

The listing says it outright: edit fields the standard editor does not (well) support, including Customer Locale and tax-exemption status. Plus filters, reusable views, segments, store-to-store migration. The app is Free. UI in English. 0 reviews at publication; launched 15 September 2026. Works with Excel and Google Sheets via CSV. No other OO app in this post.

Do not claim Shopify’s own CSV sets locale or tax exempt correctly by itself. Do claim: after import you can check and fix those columns in the spreadsheet.

Workarounds that are not a grid

1. Profile, field, Save, next

Fine until page two of the customer list.

2. CSV round-trip for one column

You export, change tags in Sheets, import back. Tags are filters, not a locale dropdown. One wrong header and you overwrite email.

3. Live edits, cell by cell, no preview

No staged state. No Discard. A consent typo is Shopify immediately.

None of those give you: pick columns → filter → cell or bulk apply → review the table → Save.

How the spreadsheet works

What is Bulk Customer Editor?: the app embeds in Shopify admin. Open it from *Start editing* or Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk. Staff needs `read_customers` and `write_customers`.

Edit customers in the spreadsheet:

1. Click a cell, type or choose.

2. Keep editing other cells.

3. Save with the Shopify save bar.

4. Discard cancels all unsaved changes.

Changes are permanent if you save. Only changed fields go to Shopify. If a row fails, the editor shows Shopify’s error so you can fix that data.

Editable:

• general: first name, last name, email, phone, tags, note, locale, tax exempt;

• marketing consent: email, SMS, WhatsApp (subscribed needs a valid opt-in);

• default address: company, lines, city, province/country codes, zip, phone;

• customer metafields defined on the shop (unsupported types may not be editable).

Read-only: among others total spent, order count, created date. Locale is a dropdown of every Shopify locale, for example Dutch (`nl`) and English (`en`).

Columns, filters, search

Choose columns, filters, and sorting: the Columns picker shows or hides fields (some identity columns always stay). The choice is remembered in that browser. Filters: field, condition (`contains`, `is`, `is empty`), value — across the whole customer list, not just the current page. Search asks Shopify (name, email, phone, tags). Locale and note match while results are scanned. Large shops: segment or search first, then filters.

Bulk apply stays staged

Apply a value to many customers: checkboxes or *Select all matching* (current search + segment + filters, up to 50,000). Pick Field, pick Value (dropdowns for locale, tax exempt, consent), *Apply to selected*. Nothing hits Shopify until Save. Selected rows do not all have to be on screen.

Large saves run in batches. Keep the tab open. Empty CSV cells do not clear existing values — useful when you later re-import only the locale column. Views are shared shop-wide; you can create segments from filters. Blocked customer data means limited editing until access is approved.

Example: two columns, one save

Migration, 1,200 rows. Locale empty. Tag `wholesale` present, tax exempt not.

1. Open the spreadsheet. Columns: Locale, Tax exempt, Tags. Hide the rest.

2. Filter Locale `is empty`. Select-all matching. Bulk apply Locale `en`. The table shows staged `en`.

3. Filter Tags `contains` `wholesale`. Bulk apply Tax exempt yes.

4. Spot-check a few rows. Save. Keep the tab open until progress finishes.

One save, two fields, no hundred opened profiles. The product page and checkout are out of scope: this is admin data.

What you need to start

3. Set columns to what you need now. Filter. Change a test cell. Discard if it was practice.

4. Bulk apply on a small set. Review. Save.
