Shopify shipping profiles vs carrier calculated app: zones and tiers stay native. Postcode, tags, and dates need OO Shipping, and an eligible plan.

Shipping profiles or a rate-rules app

Free shipping over $80. A heavier tier past 20 lb. A separate profile for a fragile lamp. That is a shipping profile. A surcharge for one rural postcode, a different price for customers tagged “trade install”, or a method that disappears on Sunday: a zone of countries and regions cannot say that. “Shopify shipping profiles vs a carrier calculated app” is that boundary.

The app is OO ‑ Shipping Rates & Rules. The plan filter is in the Advanced checklist. Custom checkout prices do not run on every plan.

Filters worth quoting

  • A zone is a group of countries or regions. Inside a location group, a country or region sits in one zone. A postcode is not a condition there.

  • Admin rates are flat, based on order amount, or based on weight. A customer tag, a date, or a SKU is not a native rate condition.

  • Live rates from your own UPS or FedEx account are third-party carrier-calculated shipping. That is a plan question, and it is a different job from an app that returns your own rules as the price.

  • New prices through this app’s carrier usually need Advanced or higher, a development store, Plus, or a shop where the carrier is already on.

  • Hiding, renaming, and reordering methods that already exist does not need that Advanced plan.

  • Shopify adding two profile rates together is not the same as one checkout line with a markup or a discount built from several rates.

  • A log of why a rate did or did not appear belongs to the app. Admin leaves you to run a test checkout.

  • Do not invent reviews. This app has none yet.

Profiles beside the app

Third-party CCS, meaning you connect a carrier account, from Help on 4 November 2026:

PlanCarrier-calculated shipping from your account
GrowAdded monthly through Support, or included with annual billing
AdvancedIncluded
PlusIncluded
Other plans, including Basic and StarterNot available

That table is about UPS, FedEx, USPS, Australia Post, and Canada Post as accounts. It does not say a Grow annual plan turns this app’s carrier on. The app docs do not list Grow as its own route. They do say: if the carrier is already active, the app treats the shop as eligible even when the plan name looks lower.

When a profile is the whole design

Stay in admin when this is all you want.

One rate for the home country, a higher rate for everywhere else, free over an order amount. A weight tier, with a weight on every product. A custom profile for the products that ship in a larger box. Live rates from your own carrier account, and your plan is in the CCS table above. A built-in USPS or Canada Post connection on a location in that country, with no extra rule logic.

The profile wins. It is the intended place for zones and tiers. Help also describes how two profiles are added together. That is enough when the buyer pays the sum. It is not enough when you need one service name, plus a handling fee or a discount on that sum.

A profile runs out when the rule is a postcode, a customer tag, a date, or a product condition that does not deserve its own profile. A zone can be a country. It cannot be “this postcode only, not when the customer is tagged pickup, and not on Sunday.” The listing’s 40+ conditions cover postcode, weight, dimensions, products, customers, and date. The price itself is fixed, tiered, or per unit, with a threshold discount, a minimum, and handling fees.

Those prices reach checkout only if the carrier is allowed to answer. On Basic or Starter, with no carrier already active, do not count on it. You get a plan banner and a checklist aimed at delivery customization. Hide, rename, and reorder still work. Delivery customization does not create a price. It changes methods that are already there.

Attach the carrier to every zone or market where checkout should ask the app (that step). A forgotten market looks like a broken app. It is not a plan problem.

What the listing pins down

Listing on 4 November 2026. Name: OO ‑ Shipping Rates & Rules. Price: Free. Zero reviews. No Built for Shopify badge on the page we fetched. Launched 28 October 2026. Listing language: English. Works with Checkout.

The hero: build the logic as a visual flow, or describe it and let AI draft it. Price a rate as fixed, in tiers, or per unit, with a threshold discount, a minimum, and a handling fee. More than 40 conditions. Combine rates into one checkout line. Hide, rename, and reorder methods. Logs show why a rate appeared.

The docs keep those logs for 7 days. Dimensional weight needs length, width, and height on the variant, plus a divisor in settings. AI is a draft. You review it before you save. An empty zone name in the visual flow is rejected.

Category tags also say distance-based and carrier-based. The hero and the plan docs describe your own rate logic through the carrier service, not a named carrier account. UPS and FedEx belong on the Help page about carrier accounts, not as a feature of this app.

Install when the zone is too coarse

A zone, a weight tier, or your own UPS account: stay with profiles, and check the CCS plan if it is a carrier account. A postcode, a tag, a date, or one checkout line built from several parts: that gap is what OO ‑ Shipping Rates & Rules fills. Free on the listing, and only with an eligible carrier for the price itself. Without that carrier you can still hide or rename methods. Do not invent reviews. There are zero.
